Adelaide Hills International Sculpture Symposium Inc

21-day event to be held at The Cedars in Hahndorf, 31 March–21 April 2014

Internationally acclaimed sculptor and resident of the Adelaide Hills Silvio Apponyi has a vision to ‘Enrich the Hills with Sculpture’.
This exciting new arts and tourism initiative will bring together eight leading professional sculptors from Australia and overseas to work in this beautiful and richly diverse region. The sculptors will work for 21 days at The Cedars and each will create a significant work for permanent installation in selected public sites in the Hills. They will be briefed to respond to the natural and built environments of the sites.
Visitors to the Cedars during the Symposium will have a unique opportunity to see these artists at work as the pieces take shape over the 21 days. Visitors will be amazed.
The final sculptures will be a lasting legacy that reflect the time and place in which they are conceived and created. They will provide an enriching cultural experience for the communities of the Adelaide Hills and South Australia and for tourists to the region.
Expressions of interest in commissioning a sculpture are being sought and community engagement and involvement is being encouraged to give local communities ownership of ‘their’ sculptures.
The Adelaide Hills Council and District Council of Mount Barker have enthusiastically supported the initiative and given seed funding. Partnerships and sponsorship opportunities are available and can be tailored to specific needs and private donations from arts lovers in the community are welcome.
This International Sculpture Symposium will become an ongoing biennial Arts event for the Adelaide Hills and South Australia, leaving a lasting and growing legacy of ‘Sculpture in the Hills’.
The AHISS is an incorporated not for profit association managed by an Executive Committee, a Mentor Board and a Symposium Board of major stakeholders such as Councils, Government, Tourism and the Community. Silvio Apponyi is the Artistic Director.
